We are delighted to introduce our music adjudicators for our 2022 Festival
Viola player, pianist, ABRSM international grade, diploma and jazz examiner and viola consultant, adjudicator, workshop/music course leader, conductor, composer and teacher, Roy studied dual first study viola and piano at the Royal College of Music with Frederick Riddle and Angus Morrison. As well as gaining 5 performing and teaching diplomas on his two main instruments and the violin, he won the Leslie Alexander Viola Competition, the highest award available at the RCM. He also has a background as an organist and gained an MA in music.
Roy has spent much of his career combining teaching, performing, examining and adjudicating. He is currently the Director of Music at Alton School, and he has taught academic music to A Level and his main instruments to diploma level. He has a passion for arranging and composing and has educational works published. He particularly enjoys working with choirs of all ages, and he has coached numerous orchestral and vocal courses for children.
Away from school life, including extended periods of professional freelance activity, his performing life has been rich and varied. For ABRSM, he has worked extensively overseas, including tours to Malaysia, Hong Kong, Qatar, Jordan, South Africa, Namibia, USA and Germany (the latter examining in German!) and China; he has also presented teacher workshops and is currently the viola consultant.
He is an adjudicator member of the British Federation of Music Festivals and in demand at some of the country’s largest Music Festivals.
Away from music, Roy’s interests include tennis and driving his old Morris camper!
Colin studied clarinet with Graham Turner (Hallé) and recorder with Ferdinand Conrad, Konrad Huenteler and Dennis Bamforth; now a freelance conductor/composer and Guest Conductor of Lufthansa Orchester following 15 years as Director of Music at the University of Warwick.
His adjudication experience began in 1975 and he is currently an Adjudicator with The British and International Federation of Festivals: he has enjoyed hundreds of festivals in the UK as well as saxophones in Luxembourg, choirs in Slovakia and wind bands in New Zealand and Hong Kong.
He served as Vice-Chairman of the Federation and was a member of the Core Team creating the 1996 Festival of Festivals.
Colin has conducted orchestras, bands and choirs internationally (National Youth Wind Orchestras of Great Britain, Hong Kong, Wales, Luxembourg) and at Dartington International Summer School and held workshops on performance, conducting, composition, chamber music, recorders and choirs.
Recent positions include Composer-in-Residence at King Henry VIII School, Coventry and at Warwick School. He is founder/conductor – Spires Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus in Coventry, Guest Conductor – Essex Chamber Orchestra and Associate Conductor – London Charity Orchestra; he founded the National Youth Recorder Orchestras and Warwick Orchestral Winds.
